The Bibliophile Walkthrough Corrections: Password, Spells and Inventory
Where a full replay of The Bibliophile disagrees with older walkthroughs: the laptop password spelling, singular spell names, inventory limits and combat timing.
FAQ
What is the correct laptop password in The Bibliophile?
Is it cast mend wound or cast mend wounds?
What do other Bibliophile walkthroughs get wrong?
This site was built by playing the game from chapter 1 to the ending, one command at a time, in a Glulx interpreter. The game was Release 1 of The Bibliophile (serial number 140408). The author’s own walkthrough document, which ships with the game, and the Key & Compass solution by David Welbourn were used as cross-checks, but every step here was typed into the game. Where a source and the game disagreed, the game won.
Which commands are written wrongly in older guides?
Two commands in the author’s own walkthrough document do not work as printed:
| # | Printed in the older document | What the game accepts | Effect of the mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Laptop password kublakahn |
kublakhan, with one a after the l |
“Password incorrect” and chapter 1 stalls |
| 2 | cast mend wounds |
cast mend wound, singular |
The plural is not recognized |
Which details do older guides leave out?
These are not errors, but they cost players restarts because the older guides do not stress them:
| # | Detail | What the replay found |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Carrying limit | You can hold about five items directly. Extra items go into the satchel only if it is open, otherwise the game says you are carrying too many things. |
| 4 | Thugs at the townhome | Knocked-out thugs wake up again if you linger, so go upstairs as soon as the second one drops. |
| 5 | Mend Wound timing | Casting it while unhurt still costs a turn, and an enemy acts during that turn. |
| 6 | The priest’s chamber | Your very first action in the room must be cast shrivel on priest. Even a look can be fatal. |
| 7 | The shambler | Shrivel only scares it away and it returns, and the sewers punish pasted command lists, so enter commands one at a time. |
| 8 | Naming the cat | It works only while the cat is in the room, it wanders, and skipping it changes nothing. |
What did the replay not cover?
We followed one complete route to the ending. We did not explore every alternative item to throw at the end, every optional conversation topic, or every way to fail a scene. Where this site describes something outside the main route, it says so. If you find a difference, check that you are playing Release 1 of the game.
Why does this page exist?
Text adventures punish small typos, and a single misspelled password can look like a bug in the game. A walkthrough that has been replayed from the start catches those mistakes. If you want the reasoning behind each step, read the chapter pages starting with Chapter 1.
